Foreigners travelling to Vietnam can apply online for visas beginning 2017

Foreign travellers wishing to travel to Vietnam can apply online for visas and obtain them within three days of filing a petition from 1 January 2017.

Tuoi Tre News stated this by citing the government news site, VGP News, which reported this news item on 4 October.

The new government resolution says that visas application online, their processing and granting for overseas tourists will be trialled for two years starting January 2017.

Visa fees will be paid through bank transfer in order to ensure transparency and to make it comfortable for tourists and to reduce intermediate expenses.

Henceforth, letter of guarantee or invitation will not be needed for online visa applications. Visas will be granted to people within three days of applying and they would be valid for 30 days.

Nguyen Van Tuan, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism head, regarded the move as the Asean country’s path-breaking measure to facilitate the issuance of visas for foreign tourists.

Besides this move, the tourism administration of Vietnam is said to be broadening its visa waiver to include more countries, which are the top source markets for tourists, he added.

The first ten months of 2016 saw more than eight million foreign nationals visiting this East Asian country. Most number of tourists came from China, followed by South Korea, Japan and the US.
